Positions Through Dialogue – Part #2

Why The Chair?

In the first session on 25th September with Michela Zoppi, we discussed this project’s possibilities. I addressed two directions that I believe this project could go along with. One is to create a series of “chair” designs that combined with cultural and historical context and translate them using my design in an ironic tone. According to my research, the object chair is closely related to patriarchal practice in the traditional Chinese family scene. The chair is a tool for the male to show their power and status in the family. For instance, the traditional dinner manner practice eliminates the female members from the dinner table. Female members are not allowed to sit and eat with male members at the same table.

In the first week, I plan to research the theme of discrimination against female members at the dinner table. With the information I have gathered, I will develop some sketches of the models.

Then, in the second week, I plan to explore more the interactive part of this project, provide limited materials to people, and ask them to make a chair miniature independently. The choice of materials will be related to my previous research. Below are the possible materials:

Chains

Sunflower seeds

Spikes/Needles

Wooden sticks(matches maybe)
